The National Registration Department (JPN) would issue the MyKad with the new features to its applicants beginning January 2012. 
Several new security features going to add into the New Mykad will be use laser technology to imprint the applicant's information and photograph onto the card itself. the new mykad chip also damage proof. the damage proof chip had tested and approved by SIRIM.
 New Malaysian identity cards would be made from the polycarbonate, which are more durable than the previous one (old Mykad / IC). 
However, in the first stage only JPN offices in Malacca, Kuching, and Kluang would process the new MyKads.

National Registration Department (NRD) To Issue New MyKad Starting January 2012

 The National Registration Department (NRD) will introduce a new MyKad  
with state-of-the-art security features starting January next year,  
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.
 
Hishammuddin
 said the new MyKad would  have enhanced security features, especially 
the chip, which will have  tamper-proof elements to prevent 
falsification, an issue raised by some.
"The
 Mykad with new structure which is  of a higher quality will meet the 
security requirement and will be  suitable for changes in time, 
situation and future challenges," he told  reporters here today after 
launching the new MyKad structure here today.
Hishammuddin
 said the new MyKad with a  polycarbonate body, uses laser cutting 
technology on its surface and  chips tested by SIRIM and recognised 
semi-conductor laboratories.
"New applicants will issued the new Mykad while current holders of Mykad can change their old card for a new one.

 who is also the Semberong  Member of Parliament added that the NRD 
would also continue its Outreach  Programme using mobile NRD services to
 identify Malaysian citizens who  do not have Mykad, especially those 
staying in remote areas.
